REEL ACTION TRIP PREPARATION
Before our guided fly fishing trips, people frequently ask us what they should bring and/or what they should wear. Below are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. We have also included a trip checklist to help you prepare for your upcoming fishing adventure. See you on the stream!
Do I need to bring any fishing gear or equipment? That is entirely up to you. While Reel Action does provide all the rods, reels and flies necessary, if you have a favorite rod you want to use or a special fly you’d like to try, by all means bring them along! One thing we would recommend is that if you have your own waders and wading boots, please bring them. While we do have waders and boots for people to use on occasion, chances are yours will fit you much better.
How should I dress? Breathable layers are the key! From head to toe, bring along several different pairs of socks, long underwear, fleece, a stocking cap and a baseball hat.
Weather during the fall, winter and spring can be very unpredictable and even throughout the day the temperatures can fluctuate greatly from early morning to afternoon. This is where layers come in handy, you never know what mother nature has in store.
What weight rods do you use? We have found that 10’ 7-weight rods best suit our needs, although depending on the rod you could also use a 6 or 8 Weight. If you would like to bring a spey rod, we recommend a 6 or 7 Weight.
I’m going to tie some of my own flies and bring them along. What do you recommend? On any given day we might use egg patterns, nymphs or streamers.
Will I need ‘spikes’ on the bottom of my wading boots? YES! In some situations you can get away with not having them, but nine times out of ten we HIGHLY recommend it! If you don’t have a pair with spikes, we will gladly lend some to you – just let us know a few days before the trip.
Right Hand vs. Left Hand Retrieve Reels All of our reels are normally set up as left hand retrieve. However, if you are left handed or are already used to reeling right handed, we will gladly supply you with a right handed reel for your trip. Please let us know in advance so we can have the reel ready for you.
Online Fishing Licenses
To fish with Reel Action Fly Fishing, you will need to obtain an appropriate state fishing license. As we cover water across three states and fishing conditions are constantly changing, we recommend that you hold off on purchasing a fishing license until you hear from your guide a few days before your trip. At that time you may chose to buy your license online. Listed below are the links for New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio online fishing licenses. (You can print these off and they are effective immediately or from any desired start date.) Additionally there are many authorized License vendors, including Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Gander Mountain, Dicks and some bait shops where you can purchase fishing licenses in state.
